£4K top price at Skipton British Blue highlight29/04/10 A top price of £4,000 for a 23-month-old bull was the highlight of the sixth annual show and sale of pedigree British Blue breeding cattle at Skipton Auction Mart’s opening pedigree beef season fixture on Wednesday 28th April 2010. Exhibited by Richard Seed & Son, of Parsonage Farm, Chipping, Preston, ‘Parsonage Drew,’ third in the 2008-born bulls class, was purchased by Warwickshire-based commercial British Blue breeders Angela Tarry-Smith and her husband Brian, of Redhouse Farm, Bishops Tachbrook, Leamington Spa, on their first-ever visit to Skipton.
Parsonage Drew, a well-grown son of the Belgian sire Empire D’Ochain, introduced to the UK by Norbreck Genetics in 2006 because of his size, style and power, out of the home-bred Parsonage Apple Pip, will now take his place as a stock bull at Kiln Farm, Brackley, Northamptonshire, also owned by the Tarry-Smiths and run by their nephew Tom Turnham. The Seeds made an impressive showing on what was their debut in the exhibition arena at Skipton with a brace of show cattle. Their second entry, the May, 2008-born black and white bull ‘Parsonage Domino ET,’ another daughter of Parsonage Apple Pip, took first prize in class, before being chosen as supreme champion by father-and-son judges Geoff and Steven Walker, of Dunsop Bridge.
Domino is by the British Blue Cattle Society-registered Blue Stone Union Jack, who formerly stood with the Pendle pedigree British Blue herd of Mark and Elaine Hartley at Roughlee, Nelson. The title winner, who won prizes as a calf at both Chipping and Hodder Valley shows, sold for £2,600 to D & S Hollings, Pecketts Well, Hebden Bridge. Reserve champion was the first prize 2007-born black and white bull from the Towngate herd of Tim and Lisa Metcalfe, of Town Bottom Farm, Clayton, Bradford. ‘Navac Cracker’ was purchased by the Metcalfes in July last year from breeder Cavan Maguire, of Maguire Livestock Services in Rishton, Blackburn. By the Belgian sire Urbi De Bois Borsu, out of Racine De Haute Somme, imported from Belgium by Maguire Livestock Services, the reserve champion sold locally for £2,900 to JA & JM Wade & Son, Cononley. Best of the females was an October, 2008-born heifer, ‘High Moss Darra,’ from 2009 show champions Jack and Rebecca Wallbank, of High Moss House, Keasden, Clapham. By Escadron De Tohogne out of the Danseur D’Embise daughter Solway View Alexander, she sold for £1,400 to East Yorkshire-based TWH Farming. Top price in class fell to the second prize heifer, ‘Craven Becky,’ owned and shown by 13-year-old Skipton Girls High School pupil Anna Stapleton, daughter of George and the late Diana Stapleton, of High Skibeden Farm, Skipton. Becky, a June, 2006-born daughter of Istamboul De L’Orgel, out of Cowden Rosemary, was served in December to Eclatant De La Scurie, and rewarded the efforts of the teenager when sold for £1,980 to T Birkett, Carnforth. Show sponsor was James Reeday, of F Reeday & Son Trailer Services in Hetton. Mr Reeday has recently taken over the regional franchise for Nugent Trailers. ‘Blue Wednesday’ was the traditional pipeopener to Skipton Auction Mart’s 2010 pedigree beef season. It continues (continued) with Craven Limousin Day on Wednesday, May 12 - a double-header featuring the annual show and sale of 98 pedigree breeding bulls and females, and the 2010 Northern Limousin Extravaganza. The season culminates on Wednesday, May 26, with another double bill - the annual multi-breed show and sale of pedigree beef breeding cattle and Spring breeding bulls, and the annual show and sale of pedigree British Blue females. Entries for both close on Monday, May 10.
