POWER AND STYLE SOUGHT AT CHELFORD BELGIAN BLUE EVENT

Saturday 2nd September 2006 saw the 44th National Show and Sale of Belgian Blue cattle at Chelford on behalf of the British Belgian Blue Cattle Society. The September sale is always much smaller in terms of numbers forward than the March event, but another huge crowd were drawn to the Centre, with the majority of vendors being happy with prices achieved for their offerings.

Blue Stone Woodpecker

The Supreme Championship at Friday evening’s Show, sponsored by Farmers Guardian, was judged by Rhys Jenkins, of the Penfro herd, North Pembrokeshire. He chose as his Champion the powerful blue and white Blue Stone Woodpecker, a January 2004-born son of Baron du Bois Bauloye, out of a Navire de Septon sired home-bred cow, from Dylan Rees. This powerful, well muscled bull was sold subsequently for 3,900 guineas to Richard Atkinson of Goole, East Yorkshire. Dylan Rees’ other entry, Blue Stone Website, an Arlequin des Peupliers son, which stood second in the class behind the Champion, made 3,400 guineas to Banks Farms, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, whilst regular Chelford vendor, Andrew Bellas, of Appleby, Cumbria, saw his June 2004-born Croftends Wonderboy make 3,000 guineas to David Cheesbrough, of Heddon on the Wall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Leading the trade for the younger bulls in the ring was the January 2005-born Penygelly Adam, from Brian Griffiths, Newtown, Powys. This son of Totem de Chocquenee, out of Lukeroyal Tootsie, made 3,200 guineas to J M Townsend, Colne, Lancashire whilst three other young bulls made 3,000 guineas. Mel and Diane Lucas from Antrim, Northern Ireland saw their Seduisant son, Lukeroyal Wee Lucas sell at that price to D J Evans, Lampeter, Dyfed; Annanwater Arnie, a son of Visconti de St Fontaine, put forward by B K Ryder and Sons, Moffat, sold to E D & H L Morris, Llanrhaeadr, Oswestry and, finally, at that price the Junior Champion Ty Isaf Adfa, from Wyn and Linda Morgan, Powys, a son of Affute out of the Bringlee Freeman-sired Ty Isaf Oriental Mist, made 3,000 guineas to S and C Morris, Craven Arms, Shropshire.

In the female section, smart well-bred, coloured heifers were most wanted, although the leading price was paid for Pawton Wisteria, a Visconti daughter shown by John Mawer of Spilsby, Lincolnshire. Due in January to Dafydd D’Ochain, she originally passed through the ring unsold, but subsequently went for 4,000 guineas to J and L Dunn, Okehampton, Devon.

Stephen Brough of Dalston, Cumbria put forward an excellent pen of young heifers, the leading price of 2,500 guineas being paid for the February 2005-born Carrock Ashlyn, a Blak du Baty d’Eprave daughter out of Bradwall Olivia, sired by the famous Lawns Dominic. She went home with and undisclosed Nottinghamshire breeder whilst the July 2004-born Carrock Walnut, a Danseur d’Embise daughter, made 2,250 guineas to J and H Griffiths, Lampeter, Ceredigion. Younger heifers usually sell well at the Chelford sale and this year was no exception, with Tom and Jack Belfield, from the Boothlow herd, Sheen, Derbyshire selling their February 2006-born show calf Boothlow Beauty, by Affute, for 1,700 guineas to D M G Games, of Talgarth, Powys. Leading the pedigree cows with calves at foot was Racine de Haute Somme from Gavin Shanks, Carluke, Lanarkshire. A daughter of Biscuit, with her May-born bull calf by Nounours at foot, she made 3,500 guineas to Cavan Macguire of Rishton, Lancashire.

In the Crossbred section, a small but select entry received spirited interest throughout. Top call of £1,800 came from respected showman Jim Hollinsworth of Mold, for a heifer he had awarded the Championship at the previous evening’s Show; a very pretty blue roan heifer shown by Jane and Danny Wyllie of the Tamhorn herd, reluctantly being offered for sale due to a hectic proposed schedule for the 2007 season. At £1,450, Frank Page, well-known show and carcase Championship winner from Northamptonshire, sold his third prize heifer to D Davies, Aberystwyth, whilst the Reserve Crossbred Champion, a powerful black steer from Messrs J and D Davies, Clifton under Dunsmore, Rugby made £1,020 to local producer, and Chelford regular, Stan Furness, Tideswell, Derbyshire.
